The Problem
It is time for choice in the delivery of our mail. It is time to end the monopoly stranglehold that the United States Postal Service , (USPS) has held on Americans for many years. We get inferior service, and have no free market alternative that can compete with the USPS due to Private Express Statutes passed by Congress. See the laws themselves; 18 U.S. Code § 1693, 18 U.S. Code § 1696, 39 U.S. Code § 601, and 39 U.S. Code § 606.
Unequal Fees
From fee.org, “Voters in rural areas also have a compelling interest in maintaining the status quo. Rural residents can send and receive mail daily at the same rates paid by urban dwellers. Since the cost to the post office is much higher in sparsely populated areas, rural mail is implicitly subsidized by urban mail.”
The Constitutional Basis
It is true that the USPS is actually constitutional, but its existence is not mandated by the United States Constitution. The section of Article 1, Section 8, that relates to post offices reads, “The Congress shall have power…” “To establish post offices…”.
Previous Competition
Lysander Spooner started The American Letter Mail Company, and forced the Post Office to reduce its rates, but eventually was shut down by government edict, because the government hates competition!
The Solution
Use other delivery services instead of the USPS, such as FedEx, UPS, DHL, or a local delivery company in your area. Also, one could choose to fax or email documents instead of mailing them.
Purchase a mailbox at The UPS Store instead of at a Post Office!
The bottom line is that the American Postal Worker’s Union is fighting hard to push back against any means of downsizing or privatizing the USPS, and there is no lobby for the average American who is suffering from poor performance. Therefore, boycotting the USPS is the best thing that we all can do to bring about choice for us all! Let’s end the USPS!
